This case study presents the struggles of a California-based company known as InterMune. This is a biotechnology company that has existed for over seventeen years, and throughout that period it went through different problems. Regardless of the many setbacks they encountered, this company succeeded in developing and getting their orphan drug approved to treat a deadly lung disease known as IPF. In September 2014, this company was acquired by Roche for 8.3 billion dollars. This premium was significant over what InterMune was trading at during that time. The company’s CEO, Dan Welch joined in 2003 and has steered this company over through many leadership changes, disappointments from clinical trials, and finally the selling of the company. This case study portrays resilience and the willpower to bounce back after every setback.
The company’s success set in in 2014 when their drug for IPF was approved by FDA. They had already solved an unmet medical need. This achievement represents over 12 years’ commitment of the IPF patients and their loved ones.
