While referring to R. Kelly’s songs that celebrate impregnation of black women and girls, Mark Anthony speaks against the idea of black men thinking that impregnating women is a valid sign of masculinity. To the author, while black men use the capability to impregnate as a yardstick for manhood, their incapability of creating, producing and sustaining families is significantly low. The men are popular with egoistic arguments that changing baby diapers, boiling bottles and preparing formula is the work of mothers. Such masculine expectations have been engraved in the minds of black women after the failure of attempts to change their men’s attitude towards childrearing failed terribly. Mark contends that the most appropriate way of affirming masculinity is being an economic provider and being physically present in their families. He challenges black men to put themselves in the shoes of their women and girls and admit the day-to-day experiences such as homophobia, sexism, racism, and misogyny. That way, they can understand the essence of empowering the women rather than burdening them (116).
Op-Ed black reiterates the same idea by speaking against the carefree attitude of Black men in childrearing. To the author, black men are unwilling to become hands-on parents for their children.
