Frankenstein’s Danger of Obsession
When Mary Shelley set out to write what is perhaps one of the most well-known monster themed works today, few imagined she would create the masterpiece she eventually did. The themes she employs were quite popular at the time she wrote Frankenstein. One dominant in the book is an obsession with fear that steadily grows as the monster asks Victor to make him a mate to which he feels compelled to oblige. The following essay will provide a literary analysis of one section of dedicated to the popular author’s work.
The theme of fear is apparent and this is clearly visible from the choice of words in one paragraph dedicated to Shelley’s work. “His fear almost paralyze him and consume his existence.” The doctor has become so afraid that the writer chooses to personify fear and the effect that it has on him. Fear is turned into a living thing that the author describes as “paralyzing and consuming” Victor. The use of this figurative language is essential as it enhances the quality of the story and shows how frightful the doctor is. The passage also contains rhetorical questions. “Had I right, for my own benefit, to inflict his curse upon everlasting generations?” (Shelley Chapter III, volume 3 page 129). The rhetorical question allows us to see into Victor’s mind as he struggles to come to terms with his actions. In this particular part of the text, it also depicts how mortified he is.
