What philosophies, approaches, and interventions do they have in common?
Rood, PNF, Brunnstrom, and NDT are traditional sensorimotor approaches used as treatment interventions among clients with CVA. Task-Oriented Approach is the latest intervention. All these interventions rely on the fact that the brain of stroke patients cannot manage to coordinate motor control and movement of muscles. These interventions lead to somatosensory stimulation and can, therefore, be used to invoke motor response (Pendleton & Krohn, 2018). All the movements are aimed at inducing muscle tone and increasing muscle strength. After repeated interventions, the client displays developmental patterns which facilitate motor skills and functionality. On a summative note, all these interventions improve functional performance and allow the client to engage in activities of daily living with ease.
How do these approaches contradict each other?
While PNF, NDT, Rood, and Brunnstrom are traditional sensorimotor approaches, the task-oriented approach is one of the latest interventions in the treatment of stroke patients. The task-oriented approach is based on the dynamic interaction between the client, environment and occupational tasks. NDT relies on the impairment of the central nervous system to facilitate coordination, muscle tone, postural balance and muscle movement (Pendleton & Krohn, 2018). The Rood approach is based on the…
