Roe V. Wade
Roe v. Wade refers to the judgment by the US Supreme Court regarding the issue of abortion. The court held that the right to privacy encompassed a woman’s choice on whether or not to terminate a pregnancy. However, the court also ruled that this right to privacy should be weighed against the state’s interests in controlling abortion, including protecting human life and women’s health. The decision nullified a state law that prohibited abortion except in cases where it was necessary to save the mother’s life. It held that states were prohibited from regulating or outlawing any facet of abortion within the first trimester. States could only ratify controls on abortion that were plausibly related to maternal health during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and could endorse abortion laws to protect the life of the fetus only in the third trimester. The court did not make a decision on the question of when life begins. That decision was left to those with sufficient training in medicine, theology, and philosophy.

Most Americans believe that abortion is an individual choice. They do not seek to overturn Roe V. Wade but prefer putting noteworthy limitations on the use of abortion. Overall, the policies maintained in Roe V. Wade have become more acceptable. The Partial-Birth Abortion Act of 2003 prohibits all forms of partial-birth abortions. Consequently, most states in the US have enacted the act, some having health exceptions.
