Currently, there is a considerably large number of patients in waiting lists patiently waiting for their turn to reach their order to receive an organ for transplantation from the national database (The National, 2018). As a result, various groups of individuals have emerged advocating for the legalization of the sale of various body organs such as the kidney. These individuals posit that the number of patients on the waiting list is higher than the number of donors. As such, it takes days and maybe years before a patient receives an organ from the national database. Therefore, they propose legalization of organ sales in an attempt to provide a solution to the existing problem. However, from an ethical point of view, buying of organs is ethically wrong as it leads to the degradation of human dignity and health.
In as much as there is a shortage of organs in the national database, people should not buy organs as it will worsen the current situation. In this regard, by allowing and encouraging individuals to buy organs for transplant from other sources instead of getting them from the national database, more people will be willing to sell their organs at a particular price as opposed to donating them for free. As a result, the national database will continue receiving fewer organ donations (Kerstein, 2018).
