Stephen King’s “My Creature from the Black Lagoon”: A Rhetorical Analysis
Stephen Edwin King is a renowned horror writer who was born in Portland in 1947. He penned the chapter “My Creature from the Black Lagoon” while writing his first book “The Danse Macabre” in 1981 (King 444). In this chapter, Mr. King compares and contrasts ways in which adults and children respond to horror films. Therefore, we will evaluate and discuss the vocabulary choices chosen by King in his introduction and find the relationship intended to be created between the writer and reader, in relation to the 3rd rhetorical question provided on this chapter (King 451).
First, he builds a drapery of recalls to his readers by repeating and re-experiencing his early experience while he was young at a horror film around the age of 7 or 8, and this arouses the interest of readers to read the text. Secondly, King uses the pathos mode of persuasion by drawing the emotion and memories of the reader consistently to the chapter through reliving his experience at the introduction of the text (King 445). To me, it is interesting and fun to read an article from the mastery of horror. This chapter is targeting two audiences. First are the parents with small children in their families and secondly those people who in their life might have enjoyed this suspended belief.
