Madam CJ Walker, born as Sarah Breedlove was the first black woman in the American history to become a millionaire. She was orphaned at the age of six. When she turned fourteen, she was married only to be widowed at the age of twenty years. During that time, she has a young daughter to sire, and therefore, she was compelled to become a laundress at St. Louis. The early years of Madam Walker significantly reflected the kind of life pattern various black women during that generation went through in America. Her life, therefore, indicates a true depiction of what black women went through to make ends meet (Aller 2016, p. 1).
In the year 1905, her condition of losing hair which she had been suffering from forced her to seek medical attention. Through her situation, she developed to care for black hair which was later termed as “Walker system.” The developed products were distinguished from other white cosmetic firms with Madam Walker arguing that the products were significantly developed to meet the health needs of the blacks. The products which were homemade got sold directly to the black women. Through her self-promotion skills, Walker attracted a great market prompting to be one of most famous black Americans (Aller 2016, p. 3).
