The provision of high quality requires the coordination of tasks and effective communication among all the various stakeholders (Bookey‐Bassett et al., 2017). For a holistic and a patient-centered care, professionals such as doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists among others must work together to accomplish the desired patient outcomes such as safety and quality. My understanding of interprofessional practice is therefore based on the vital and different responsibilities of the various healthcare professionals such, as doctors and nurses, towards the improvement of the patient’s condition.
The position of the American Nurses Association (ANA) on interprofessional practice is highlighted on the benefits of collaboration in enhancing the patients’ outcomes and in improving the functional level of health care teams (Farrell, Payne, & Heye, 2015). Collaboration and interprofessional practice are considered vital skills for nurses just as other competencies such as undertaking the physical assessment. Similarly, ANA considers interprofessional practice as vital for the improvement of the organizational performance dynamics such as teamwork effectiveness.
