Major League Soccer is selected as a sports league that is based in Canada and the United States and operates outside them. According to González, Unanue, Sánchez, Guisado & Corral (2016), the Major League Soccer remains overlooked in studies despite being an emerging soccer competition within North America. Nonetheless, the competition has become a tempting scenario for sports managers and economists based on its economic regulations, expansion strategies, fast growth, and single format. For instance, the development of soccer-specific stadiums has remained one of the essential development strategies in the sports league. This study intends to present the basic elements for a Major League Soccer as an international sports league.
Organization, Structure, and Rules of the League
Major League Soccer was established in 1994 as a condition for hosting World Cup in the United States. The establishment was partly attributed to the tournament grant which necessitated the country to begin a top-notch professional league. MLS started the play two years after its establishment. MLS started with ten clubs but have undergone rebrands because the majority of the original logos were characterized with worst design trends during the mid-1990s (Cleveland, 2017).
