“In the future, other countries such as China and India will rise, and the United States’ power will decline, thus creating instability in the world.”
I agree that the rise of emerging powers like China and India will lead to a decline in the United States’ power and cause instability in the world, but only to the extent that these nations will challenge the United States. Snow notes “the degree and extent to which rising powers challenge the given order depends to a great degree on the areas in which the rising powers seek to influence the existing order and establish their own places” (49). China’s and India’s rise in power will most likely make it difficult for the US to safeguard its interests and cause disagreement, which will increase uncertainty in the world. This instability will arise because for the period the United States has been a superpower, it has provided security and novel technologies, sold goods and services, exported capital, as well as paved the way for the emergence of new powers. Snow reveals in his work that “Dominant powers—by providing security, exporting capital, selling goods and services, and creating new technologies— unwittingly enable the rise of new centers of strength.
