The Unknown Citizen by W.H. Auden focuses on the theme of identity. The unknown citizen or the poem’s major character has no identity. Auden utilizes the concept of Unknown Soldier whose physical remains cannot be attached to a particular person’s identity. The unknown citizen lived an excessively conventional life that he cannot be distinguished from other citizens (Auden, 1). The author tries to critique people who are living a conventional life that nothing unusual or unique about them can be said. There are many people of this kind whose approach to life is so casual or conventional that no particular attributes can be identified with the person. There are people with unique characteristics such as being so friendly or talkative that their presence cannot be ignored. They cause trouble and get in the way of many people sometimes entertaining them when they are not an irritant. The poet tries to paint ‘unknown citizens’ in a negative manner, but there is nothing wrong with being conventional. People with odd views or mannerism are not special in any manner. People have unique personalities and behavior, and there is no wrong behaving in a certain way so long it does not harm another person.
