Behaviorism can merely be defined as a learning theory or mechanism, which focuses on observable behaviors and disregards any form of independent activities. A closer view into some ways of teaching children using this mechanism is discussed in this essay. This form of education emphasizes why people behave in a particular manner. Additionally, it can be viewed as action-oriented and purely disregards any kinds of emotions associated with a reaction just because it is impossible to measure it.
Behaviorism can be divided into two major sections – classical and operant. A closer understanding of these sections will give one a better understanding of the approach to use. Classic conditioning naturally means a natural reflex or response to stimuli. This is whereby a child reacts apprehensively to the thought of taking up action such as a test. Typically, all actions require a reaction whether positive or negative. On the other hand, the operant form of behaviorism is where learning takes place with the intentions of rewarding. Most of the times, incentives bring out positive rewards. This can be observed when a child performs well in a test and is promised a new toy or certain gifts (Isanezhad 34). However, a child can be observed to be rewarded for his or her negative behaviors.
