Introduction
‘A Rose for Emily’ is a wonderful passage by William Faulkner because it reflects the current situation in our societies. An unknown person tells the story after the end of miss Emily. Emily is portrayed as a protagonist character and her life used as a symbol for the changes in town after the civil war. The primary goal of the story is to express the decay in town and Miss Emily’s life. The narrative shows changes always take place and there is nothing permanent since we all grow old and decay. Also, it expresses the idea of change resistance by the protagonist Emily who refuses to accept to change. The fact that Emily is referred to as a fallen monument symbolizes that she represents stubborn memorial of the past (Faulkner, 155). It would mean that she was once beautiful and wealthy, but with time she ended up growing old and poor.
In the passage, the author intends to express the idea that there is a need for change. The author of the passage expresses his disappoint through the fact that Emily is a strong woman, but she is a victim of her resistance to change. In this narrative, short and straightforward declarative sentence has been employed to express the real meaning of events.
