The Pedestrian
The Pedestrian’s overall theme relates to the dangers that the technology has on both humanity and society. Ray Bradbury’s story occurs in a futuristic society. Less human interactions characterize society as individuals tend to spend more time watching television and considerably less time interacting with fellow humans or taking part in simple activities such as taking a walk. Notably, in the described society, taking a walk in the streets is against the law. If found taking a walk, individuals are sent to mental institutions for evaluation. Undoubtedly, Bradbury seeks to advise his readers to be wary of technology as it threatens humanity. Instead of bringing us together, advances like television creates some distance between humans. In this regard, Bradbury uses one of his characters, Leonard Mead to illustrate how technology has made individuals forget about their social lives. Leonard is quoted saying “Was that a murmur of laughter from within a moon-white house? In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not once in all that time” (Bradbury 1). Therefore, Bradbury warns us of the negative impacts of technology. It makes us conform by having control over us. Notably “this one particular house had all of its electric lights brightly lit, every window a lout yellow illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness” (Bradbury 1).
