The Declaration of Independence (1776) and George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945) depict a typical situation that countries under oppressive governance experience leading to the rebellion of the citizens for freedom and happiness. In this study, the two materials are analyzed to understand the roles individuals have in restoration of their rights. In no doubt, both the declaration of independence and Orwell’s Animal Farm shows that people always have the ability to make their own decisions.
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson explains that all men are created equal, and there exist unalienable rights that the government should protect. However, he expressed that in case of government’s failure to protect these rights, it is both right and the duty of people to overthrow such government (US 1776). The same case occurred in “Animal Farm” where animals revolted against Mr. Jones for their freedom. According to the animals in the Orwell’s story “Man serves the interests of no creature except himself” (5). A similar case that Jefferson pointed out about the British dictators that exploited its colonies in the US. Therefore, Jefferson called for the rebellion and unity of the 13 territories into the US. Both the Orwell’s Animal farm and Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence inspires people’s revolutionary actions in creation for new freedom and happiness.
