The self-governing non-profit National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN,) is the organization through which boards of nursing regulate mutual concerns regarding the public safety, healthy, and the development of the licensure exams. The two main boards that work in conjunction with this examination organization are the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
Both the AANP and ANCC boards govern the administration of certification exams to nurses aspiring to become nurse practitioners (BoardVitals, 2018). Within these boards are various areas of specialty including Adult-Gerontology and Family practice with exams administered as either acute or primary care. The ANCC provides basis for Advanced Practice including advanced, professional, and independent practice. The AANP, on the other hand, provides for assessment which includes both objective and subjective information regarding the patient (BoardVitals, 2018). Generally, the two boards differ in that unlike AANP, ANCC comprises of more questions focused more on professional matters including ethics and healthcare policy. Thus, ANCC is the exam I plan to take since it has in-depth content regarding my profession alongside patient care and safety.
