In this chapter, Joey and Topthorn haul an ambulance cart. The two help save the wounded from the fields. It is summer, and the two horses are happy despite the war. The two are also crowned winners in the war and receive the Iron Cross as a medal for their victory. The Germans are poor at taking care of horses. However, Joey and Topthorn fall into good hands. Emilie and her grandfather take good care of the two horses every evening. They nursed Joey and Topthorn with affection. Emilie “a tiny, frail creature” grows fond of the two horses (Morpurgo 32). She comes down with a sickness the German doctor refers to as pneumonia. Her grandfather is afraid she will die and goes ahead to talk to Joey and Topthorn. He urges them to pray for his granddaughter just as she did pray for them every night. There is joy when Emilie recovers.
The author, Morpurgo, uses literary personification to paint a picture of a cordial relationship between Joey, Topthorn, and Emilie. He accords human attributes to the two horses. They can relate well with Emilie and her grandfather as they can understand what is going on. They recognize the Germans are not good care-takers unlike Emily and her grandfather. The horses also perceive emotions as Morpurgo describes the horses as happy in that particular summer. Another human attribute given to the horses is the ability to retain memories.
