Abuse of Power in Animal Farm
One of the major themes in Animal Farm is the abuse of power or what can otherwise be put as the corrupt influence exercised by those in power. In this case, the pigs have the power. As conveyed by Old Major in his speech to the other animals, the revolution of the animals initially begins with the best of intentions. They want to achieve a better life where they are treated fairly and are freed from the injustices of human beings which has for so long characterized their lives. However, as soon as Animal Farm is established, the pigs who have emerged out as the leaders after the revolution begin to use their power and authority to disrupt the very principles of the revolution for their own selfish gains. They are only focused on making their lives better as they do not consider the other animals yet they were all against human injustices. In the beginning, corruption in the farm is somewhat subtle, as at first it only starts with the missing apples and milk (Orwell 314). Yet, as the book comes to an end, the pigs have become so much corrupt such that the other animals can no longer differentiate them from humans. This paper, therefore, seeks to reflect and give insight into abuse of power as a theme in George Orwell’s Animal Farm and how this applies to human life.
