Islam and its effects on the culture of Southeast Asia
About 65% of the entire Islam fraternity that exists in the world are found in Asia. Of these Muslims, a high percentage lives in the Southeast part of the country which is Indonesia. Due to this high population of Muslims in this part of Asia, various aspects of life have been affected. First, unity in the region has been boosted. The fact that a high number of people in the region are Muslims has made it possible to organize and conduct religious events (Laffan 1). These events are attended by many people who have a common objective and interest. The people support each other and this introduces positive values in the community.
The fact that the dominant religion in this region is Islam has directly influenced the art. Paintings, literature, music and other performances are shaped according to Islamic doctrines. Some policies have been set by the official of Islam to govern art (Laffan 1). All the work of arts is supposed to have moral lessons. Some content such as those promoting drug use, violence and other forms of fracas are discouraged by the religion. This has helped create a good culture which supports and aims at forming peaceful coexistence.
