Travelling abroad is often depicted as an incredible experience full of fun and good memories. However, I was ill-prepared to what I saw on my trip to the Dominican Republic this July. At a first glance and without leaving the plane, the inequality on which Dominicans live is shocking. In one side of the island, immense resorts full of luxury and in the other, slums and poverty.
As a result, I consider I have grown compassionate of those who need my help. It was harsh to see how many people of the island made their living thanks to the tourism; yet it feels wrong that those companies who built the resorts are not trying to help the poverty-stricken areas as a way to return something to the country besides taxes. During my trip, I realized that although the Dominican Republic can be perceived as a poorer country, poverty has the same face regardless where you go. Children with their bellies full of parasites; slums; bare-footed girls. It all shook me.
Hence, using my experience as a social worker helped me understanding the problems behind this situation and allowed me to assess the situation, finding ways I could help. Nevertheless, trying to help an entire country without the resources is like trying to put out a house fire with a bucket full of water.
It was sad seeing how many things could be done and how tourism, the most important economic activity in the country could generate so much well-being…
