In the article, Edward Burger believes that failure is a necessary evil that should be taught in learning institutions. The education system has set the bar very high to the point that students cheat at exams to avoid failure. Burger argues that failure helps students to reflect on their mistakes, develop new insight and finally succeed. Students are therefore advised to fail because it motivates them to read more and explore to determine where they made a mistake and how it can be addressed. Deliberate promotion of failure is not a solution to addressing failure in learning institutions, but there is a need to initiate reforms in the education system to suit all students.
Every student goes to school hoping that they will pass their exams and succeed. In fact, most of them desire to thrive in their academics and career life, but this is not always the case. Failure cannot be used to justify academic excellence. It is quite perplexing that an instructor can advise his students that “if they want to earn an A, they must regularly fail in their course” (Burger 1). I can only compare this to a scenario when an instructor assures me of a good grade even if I do not read or attend classes. The instructor would have already predisposed me to failure, and if I do not read and attend classes, then I am inevitably bound to fail.
