Dear aunt,
Hope this letter finds you in the best of health and in good spirits. It’s been a long time since I last wrote to you but you will surely forgive me when you learn of my circumstances.
As you know, I was working as a manager in an automobile factory and was doing reasonably well. But, due to the stock market crash all my investments have become worthless and my company is at the doorstep of bankruptcy. From the three-bedroom apartment in the suburbs we have shifted to a single room flat and all seven of us are living there now. I don’t know for how long I will be able to keep my job. Moreover, with an unemployment rate as high as 30% chances of finding a new job are really low (Harold 29).
Amidst all this bad news, there seems to be a ray of hope in form of the presidential elections, which are right around the corner. The fight is between the incumbent president Herbert Hoover and the democratic candidate Franklin Roosevelt. I find Roosevelt’s vision of American future and the concept of new deal extremely promising. It seems that if he comes to power he will be able to find solutions to the problems plaguing this country (Salsman 16).
Even though America is the land of great opportunities, sometimes I wonder if living in Europe is easier. Hopefully, these elections will bring a turnaround in its fortunes. With hard work and dedication, and a bit of luck I hope to make a life …
