Standard deviation is the measure of the extent to which numbers are spread out from an expected value or the mean. There are high and low standard deviations. Low standard deviation indicates that the majority of the items are close to the average, on the other hand, the high standard deviation is one in which the number widely spread out from the norm. The determination of high and low standard deviations forms the fundamental need to calculate the standard deviation of a dataset. With standard deviation, one can judge the volatility and risk relating to funds and investments (Kiersz, par. 5). More so, it enables one to effectively compare different data sets which may seem to have an equal average.

The identified article involves research carried out to determine the standard deviation of the age of children with tobacco and other substance abuse behaviours amongst street children. The study included 100 children, and it was carried out in Northern India in the year 2009 between January and February. The identified sample comprised of different races including Indians and Nepalese. Seventy-four of the children were Indians, and 26 were Nepalese. Eighty kids among the one hundred were above the age of twelve.
