Poverty is regarded as one of the primary problems in the United States. The level of poverty in America is ranked higher than that other developed nations. The poor people cannot afford basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing. Thus, they end up borrowing and depending on the aid from the government and other non-governmental organizations.
Charlotte is the 17th largest city in the United States. The city is home to 10% of North Carolina people thus it is a vital region in America’s growth. However, the poverty levels in the city have been increasing over the years (Nichol, 2016). The rate has risen from 10% in 2000 to 18% in 2016. Most of the African Americans and Hispanics residing in the city live below the poverty line. Today, 13.4% (111,077 out of 829,000 citizens) of the population in Charlotte live below the poverty line. This percentage is slightly lower than the national mean of 14%. According to the U.S Census Bureau, the average domestic revenue for residents of Charlotte was $55,599 (U.S Census, 2018). The percentage indicates that most of the people earn low wages while others are unemployed. Furthermore, most of the people living in poverty are the females aged 18-24 trailed by females of 35-44 and then 25-34.
