Impact of Non-Negotiation with Terrorist Policy on the Syrian War
In July 2015, the former U.S. President Barrack Obama pronounced a policy bombshell that shredded legitimacy of engaging in negotiations with terrorists. He staunchly declared that the U.S. would remain in the macho mantra of ‘no negotiation with hostage takers’ (Faure, 2015). This was a continuation of the policy made during the zenith of the global war on terrorism after the 9/11 attack. The policy transition enhanced war against terrorism on the ground with the aid of local and regional partners in the protracted Syrian war. However, the counterterrorism attack against the Islamic State has produced unprecedented side effects. It has empowered IS’s Jihadi rivals, such as the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front, that is even a greater challenge to the U.S. and its western allies.
The lack of willingness to negotiate with terrorists in the Syrian war, and instead preferring to use military and intelligence-laden counterterrorism measures have negative impacts on Syrian refugees. It has generated an intricate recipe for the massacre as the war continues with no sign of ending seven years after its commencement (Schneider et al., 2017).
