Many schools are not only in competition but also in business. As a result, they tend to advance students to the next grade even when a student fails to meet the requirements to advance to the next level. The tendency of pushing students is unethical as at the end of a particular course the schools churn out half-baked students. Therefore, it is apparent that students should only advance to the next level only if they meet the standard academic requirements.
According to Williams (2017), keeping students in a grade for many years can cause their self-esteem to drop. However, self-esteem should not be considered a basis upon which to measure a child’s success in education. Instead, teachers should prioritize grade and the potential of a student when it comes to deciding whether or not to promote students to the next level. Additionally, using self-esteem reasoning to advance students to the next level will only encourage laziness among them as they will not work hard in their education when they know that they will get the promotion to the next grade without even recording good results. Therefore, before advancing students to the next class, it is essential for the teachers to consider the students’ performances and potentials.
