Payments for athletes
The issue of compensation of athletes for their craft has often triggered a debate on the matter of adequacy and proportionality to their input. In light of developments in the professional sporting industry, it is becoming increasingly evident and acceptable that athletes are deserving of their wages, either where insignificantly low or absurdly high.
Numerous commentators conceded that indeed, athletes are worthy of very high wages for various reasons. Ideally and from a moral perspective, sports as a commercial entity has witnessed tumultuous growth over the past few decades. This has culminated in unprecedented profits for a vast majority of stakeholders in the sporting industry. Some have argued that, to deny the athletes an equitable share of this returns would be to act against the moral order (Kim et al. 304). In this way, the athletes are deserving of the excessive charges some of them take home in wages.
Further, some have argued that indeed athletes deserve the pay they earn, as a reward for the immense physical effort they invest in athletics. Many times, athletes are reported to dedicate a significant portion of their lives for the advancement of sporting agendas. This often implies hard work and dedication to attain greater payments (Burnett et al. 8). The wages earned by athletes are merely a reward for the effort and as such is deserved.
