Julia Robinson
Julia Bowman Robinson was born in December 1919 to her parents Helen Hall Bowman and Ralph Bowers Bowman in St. Louis, Missouri. She attended San Diego High and later joined San Diego University. However, she transferred to the University of California, Berkeley where she graduated with BA degree and then her Ph.D. in 1948. She got married to her colleague Raphael Robinson in 1941(Reid 4). Those who knew Julia personally remember her for idealism, commitment, hard work and appreciation for other people’s work.
Alfred Tarski supervised Robinson’s Ph.D. thesis and challenged her on the Diophantine equations (Feferman 12). Her thesis focused on how integers can be expressed as rational numbers by using operations such as addition and multiplication. The proof became useful in the formulation of problems in the elementary Number Theory. After that Robinson became a graduate assistant professor at the University of California.
Hilbert’s Tenth Problem occupied most of Robinson’s career (Feferman 17). It is a famous algorithm known for determining how solvable integers are when it comes to Diophantine equations. In conjunction with two of her colleagues, Martin Davis and Hilary Putnam, they published a paper in which they gave details on the exponential growth of exponents which tend to bear a negative solution when Hilbert’s problem is concerned. Other Robinson’s publications included the 1948 paper on the sequential a…
