In Defense of Marriage by John Cornyn
In the last two decades, a lot has changed about the concept of a marriage institution. In 1996, nationwide elected leaders felt that the traditional marriage was under a threat. As a result, leaders from both political divides came together and enacted the Defense of Marriage Act. According to the Act, a marriage is defined as a union of one man and one woman (Roca et al., 2017). However, many opposition and resentment against the traditional marriage legislation have been raised throughout the years.
Despite the fact that many Americans still believe that children are best raised by their mother and father, a significant number of leaders, some who previously supported the DOMA, are against the Act. The most common argument against the laws is that they are unconstitutional and discriminative against persons in a homosexual relationship (Roca et al., 2017). Unless there is a constitutional amendment, marriage should be granted to same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples alike (Roca et al., 2017). Consequently, in order to abolish DOMA, a nationwide litigation movement is ongoing. To their advantage, this campaign is supported by key public figures such as Senator John Kerry, Rep. Jerrold Nadler and former presidential candidate Howard Dean among others.
