I would like provide some perspective on the issue of fast food restaurants in minority neighborhoods such as Brownsville and Crown Heights in relation to health problems. Substantial health disparities in economically distressed areas have been attributed to many factors. One such factor is access to unhealthy foods. The accessibility to fast food restaurants in the minority neighborhoods has become a major role in driving the health disparities. They are attributed to the high carbohydrates, fats, and sugar which subsequently expose the individuals in these neighborhoods to higher risks of acquiring obesity and other nutritional-related illnesses.
Recent trends show that the more people eat from these fast food restaurants, they continue to gain energy from sugars and fats. Mostly, these are associated with the unfair distribution of healthy food sources within these neighborhoods. High prevalence of obesity within minority groups and low-income populations is greatly connected to the limited access to healthy food and the consequent availability of fast-food outlets within their neighborhoods. A close observation of the services offered by fast-food restaurants clearly indicates that they offer a restricted choice of healthy foods.
