Social Security programs have played a significant role in the reduction of elderly poverty over time. It is true that in the U.S 15.3 million seniors would today be in poverty if there was no Social Security. (Gould, E. 2014). That could mean the poverty rate amongst the elderly would be four times what it is today. This security has helped to keep most of the people above the poverty line.
However, it is also evident that the Social Security, as much as it is highly valuable, is not able to offer a lavish living to this group. Most of the seniors in America depend on the retirement that takes care of the basic necessities, which is a simple, dignified quality of life. Almost half of the America elderly population are “economically vulnerable,” that is, to have an income which is lower than twice the supplemented threshold.
When the vulnerability of the women is compared to that of men, it is evident that women are more economically vulnerable than the senior men. At the age of 65, 52.6 percent of the total number of women are financially vulnerable while men are about 41.9 percent. (Gould, E. 2014). Therefore, the men’s share during this distribution is always higher than that allocated to the women. It means that retirement security is a big issue as far as the senior women as concerned.
