Methods to Elicit Confessions:
There are many methods which detectives use to elicit confessions from suspects. The police in the United States commonly use the Reid method. The Reid technique has three components which are; Interrogations, interviewing and factual analysis (Oxburgh et al. 140). The interrogation and the interviewing process can lead to a false confession because some of the detectives use cohesive and confrontational ways on the suspects. Lies, promises and sustained attack on the suspects’ memory which the police use can make them confess to crimes they never committed (National Geographic n.p). An accurate analysis method is an inductive approach where suspects are respectfully assessed according to observations connected to the crime.
A person can be mentally tortured by the detectives to confess to a crime they know nothing about. Most of the detectives assume that all the suspects are guilty until proven otherwise and that is the reason why they torture suspects for them to confess.
Michael would confess even if he were innocent because of the constant attack on his memory. The interrogation style the detectives used on Michael was cohesive and confrontational.
