Aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, 104 abled men arrived in Virginia in the year 1607 at a location they called Jamestown. It was the main permanent English settlement in the new world. Later on after thirteen years elapsed, 102 pilgrims on board the Mayflower arrived in Massachusetts at a placed they christened Plymouth. With these two provinces, English settlement was conceived.
Jamestown offered a safe haven and a decent defensive position. The warm atmosphere and rich soil enabled expansive estates to succeed. Plymouth gave good anchorage and an incredible harbor. The chilly atmosphere and thin, rough soil restricted the farm sizes. New Englanders opted for lumbering, shipbuilding, trade, and fishing (Maudlin and Robin 77).
The Pilgrims came for Plymouth, whereas Europeans opted for Jamestown. Moreover, the major conflict among the inhabitants of Plymouth was due to economy and religion, but in Jamestown, it was about the economy.
Freedom from religious oppression propelled the pilgrims to leave England for Holland, where people had religious freedom. Nonetheless, after several years, the pilgrims felt their kids’ faith was being undermined by the Liberal Dutch way of life, and they were in danger of losing their English legitimacy.
