Biological Aspects of Young and Middle Adulthood
The definition of Kirst-Ashman and Zastrow which explains young adulthood as well as middle adulthood is mainly based on the mental state of a person. If I were to make a personal classification, I would also borrow from the authors but would also incorporate a different approach altogether. My new classification would be entirely based on age and phases. The definition of the new classification will be the will to desire, dream and pursue those desires (Zastrow, 2006). The ability of an individual to redefine their values and understand that the conventional achievements of the society such as getting married and running career are not enough to make one successful. The age group falling under this new definition will still crave success, love, and money but lack of it will not depress them
Support of the New Definition
According to Erik Erikson’s stages of human development, the young adult comes before middle adulthood. It is difficult to define the timeliness of young adulthood due to various reasons thus the need for subdividing them into phases (Zastrow, 2006). There are variances in social, psychosocial and physical developments of people of the same age group. While the young adults are focused on defining their identities, the middle adults concentrate more on achieving concrete and realistic goals.
