Piaget’s Theory of Infant Development
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) came up with a theory of cognitive development that has four namely sensorimotor, preoperational, operational, and formal operational stage. From personal experience, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is satisfactory not only in understanding knowledge development process among children but also the nature of intelligence.
Some time back my auntie fell sick and was accommodated at a County Hospital. I was requested to stay with her the baby. Being summer and no school, I went to my auntie’s to babysit. As a 16 years old girl, I did not know much about babies and simple tasks such as changing diapers were problematic. Luckily, her neighbor, Mrs. Dean, came and offered to accompany me for the weekend and help me care for the baby. In those two days, I learned washing, feeding, changing the baby, and even soothing her to sleep. Mrs. Dean would show me and then leave me with Do It Yourself tasks. Even when she went back to her house for the following work week, she would pass by at evening and find everything done. By the second week, my aunt had recovered and was back at home.
My learning experience was based on observing, experimenting, learning, and adaptation. I assimilated new information I acquired from Mrs. Dean during the weekend. I accommodated this information and built new knowledge that I could use in some tasks. The new knowledge could …
